With his celebrated band Balkanopolis, Trkulja will perform the song Tri ružice“ (Three Roses).

This track, announced as an ethno-jazz piece, has already attracted significant attention, as Trkulja’s unique style is a blend of traditional Serbian music, Byzantine spiritual chants, and modern genres.

Trkulja’s performance in Moscow will be a unique opportunity to promote Serbia’s rich musical heritage on the international stage, as part of a competition designed as an alternative to Eurovision.

From Beovizija to Intervision

This is not the first time Trkulja has participated in a major music competition. The Serbian audience remembers him for his appearance at Beovizija 2007, the national selection for Serbia’s Eurovision representative. Back then, with the song Nebo (Sky), he took a respectable second place, right behind Marija Šerifović, who went on to win Eurovision that year with her song Molitva“ (Prayer), securing Serbia’s first victory. Trkulja’s participation at the time confirmed his immense talent and authenticity, making him stand out from the more commercial pop songs.

Since then, Trkulja has further developed his musical expression, which combines the rich heritage of the Balkans, Orthodox chants, and contemporary jazz influences, earning him international acclaim. He has performed with some of the biggest names in the world, and his dedication to preserving and modernizing traditional music has given him a cult status.

Participating in Intervision is a chance to present this unique fusion to a new, broader audience. Given that the festival promotes „traditional values“ and authentic music, Trkulja’s style fits this concept perfectly, which could lead to notable success. The audience in Moscow and worldwide will have the opportunity to hear a different, deeply rooted yet modern sound that is Trkulja’s trademark.

Will Trkulja compete for Eurovision again?

After establishing a successful career in Serbia and gaining international recognition, many fans have wondered if Slobodan Trkulja would ever enter Eurovision again. His participation in Intervision has reignited this debate.

While Eurovision and Intervision represent two festivals with opposing ideologies—one embracing a modern and inclusive pop sound, the other emphasizing traditional values—Trkulja’s unique style could prove to be highly successful at Eurovision. In recent years, ethno music has been gaining popularity, and authentic performances are particularly appreciated. Examples like Marija Šerifović’s „Molitva“ and other successful ethno-pop entries show that audiences value artists who are not afraid to blend tradition with contemporary elements.

Competing in Intervision with „Tri ružice“ will provide Trkulja with valuable experience on a major international stage, which could serve as a springboard for future projects. Whether he will consider a return to Eurovision remains to be seen, but one thing is for sure: wherever he appears, Slobodan Trkulja brings a unique musical signature that combines authenticity and quality. His performance at Intervision will be a test for his music and an opportunity to prove himself to a new audience.
